Cosmetic surgery websites – they’re not giving you the whole pictur e
online information by cosmetic surgeries provies incomplete information on the complications of breast augmentation, accoring to new research at the Brighton an Sussex Meical School (BSMS),run by the universities of Brighton an Sussex.
4 October 2018
It foun that websites by cosmetic surgery proviers offer “ incomplete information ” to perspective patients.
Laura Manley,a fourth year meical stuent,an Professor Pietro Ghezzi,RM Phillips Chair in Experimental Meicine at BSMS, investigate the first 200 websites returne by a Google search on breast enlargement. In total,74 per cent of the results were the websites of cosmetic surgery proviers followe by price comparison websites (6 per cent).
With many women uner increasing pressure in regars to their boy image,a growing number are choosing to unergo breast augmentation proceures. Figures from 2017 show that almost 300,000 an 28,000 surgeries were performe in the USA an in the UK respectively. Many women initially turn to the internet for information on the proceure, incluing the costs involve, possible sie effects an which surgeon to use.
Professor Ghezzi sai: “ This stuy foun that cosmetic surgery proviers ’ websites faile to provie complete information. They offere aequate information on the proceure itself, mentioning five aspects of it on average, such as the anesthetic use,the location of the incision an the type of implant.
“ However, only a quarter of them reporte the cost of the proceure or the fact that the proceure is not permanent. only one in five isclose potential limitations of the final result of the implants. ”
Researchers sai these websites were also poor in informing possible clients about the many potential complications of the proceure such as the risk of infections, ruptures an contraction of harene scar tissue, with only one complication escribe on average. The complications least mentione were the nee for revision surgery or reoperation (one thir of the websites analyse) or the risk of a particular type of lymphoma (one in 10 websites).
Professor Ghezzi sai: “ Incomplete information can be a cause for patients not being fully satisfie with the surgery, filing complaints or even resorting to litigation.
“ The stuy highlights the nee for plastic surgeons to evelop guielines for the information that is provie by websites on breast augmentation. ”
Dr Jessica Eccles
$100,000 grant to investigate ‘brain fog’
3 October 2018
The grant, from the USA,a non-profit organisation that seeks to improve the lives of iniviuals living with autonomic nervous system isorers, has gone to Dr Jessica Eccles,National Institute for Health Research Clinical Lecturer at BSMS,run by the universities of Brighton an Sussex.
Postural orthostatic tachycaria synrome (POTS) is an uner-stuie isorer also characterise by tremors, heart palpitations an fainting or near-fainting upon moving from a prone to upright position.
The grant is aime at further eveloping Dr Eccles ’ s research into the synrome. She sai: “ Research suggests that almost all patients with POTS experience this isabling symptom – however, the mechanisms unerpinning brain fog an its impact on quality of life are currently very poorly unerstoo.
“ With this grant from Dysautonomia International,I will seek to aress this problem by unerstaning the brain-boy mechanisms involve in brain fog. ”
POTS mainly affects women (about 85 per cent of cases). Patients often experience thinking ifficulties when the autonomic nervous system is challenge by being place on a tilt table or staning,an there are also accompanying changes in bloo flow in the brain. Dr. Eccles believes that that brain fog may arise in a similar way,an hopes this project can further explore this area by combing such techniques with non-invasive imaging of the brain – use of an electroencephalogram an magnetic resonance imaging.
Dr Eccles explaine: “ Recent ata from brain scans shows that challenging the autonomic nervous system in a similar way to staning changes bloo flow in the brain in otherwise healthy iniviuals. Prior research emonstrates that POTS patients have altere bloo flow to the brain when they stan. We think this may well be why patients with POTS experience brain fog. ”
Dr Eccles hopes her research will help increase knowlege among patients an octors alike: “ We believe that this project will be relevant to fining an personalising treatments to iniviuals with POTS,brain fog an also patients with other conitions relate to the autonomic nervous system. Potentially, this will bring relief from a consierably isabling symptom that has a significant impact on quality of life for patients living with these conitions. ”
Lauren Stiles,Presient of Dysautonomia International, sai: “ Dysautonomia International is please to support the innovative POTS research occurring at BSMS,le by Dr Eccles. Gaining a better unerstaning of brain functioning in POTS may help us ientify better treatment options
Dr Sreejith Raveenran
Dr Dimitriy Berillo
Double win for research fellows
Two research fellows from the University of Brighton have been celebrating taking top honours at a prestigious European science congress.
31 August 2018
Welcoming news of the ouble win,Professor Davi Timson,Hea of the School of Pharmacy an Biomolecular Science sai: “ This is a fantastic achievement an important recognition of the important research being unertaken by Dr Raveenran an Dr Berillo here in Brighton.&rquo;
Their work is helping to push the bounaries of knowlege in their fiel an coul lea to the evelopment of important practical meical applications that coul revolutionise treatments an bring major benefit to patients. ”
Marie Skłoowska-Curie Research Fellowships enable experience researchers to work in acaemic institutions aroun the worl an help to promote collaboration between acaemics an inustry.
Dr Raveenran an Dr Berillo gratefully acknowlege the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research an Innovation Programme uner the Marie Skłoowska-Curie Fellowship Grant for support with their research an attenance at the congress.
