国内大多家长对文理学院了解不深,以为叫学院的是大专或者三本院校。美国文理学院英文称为 Liberal Arts College,美国人觉得:“似乎美国文理学院才是美国本科教育的优势所在”,缘由来自文理学院注重本科教育,激发学生探索寻求真正的兴趣。
文理学院是4年制本科大学,学校颁发学士学位证书。这些学院被美国人认为是本科精英教育的典范。在这类大学里,班级规模小,教授专注本科教学,学生很早就参与项目研究,培养能力而非技能,这些都是文理学院的精髓。全美一共有252所文理学院,其中225所为私立,27所为公立。
文理学院通常提供通用基础课程而不是专业或职业课程。通常包含人文、科学、社会学科,无工程学科。文理学院的人数平均为2000人,班级规模小于20人。学生从教授那里获得更多关注,更容易与教授这位同学建立起坚固联系和专业关系。
小班授课
致力于小班授课和广泛学习基础科学,这是与大型综合性大学有明显区别的。文理学院一般较小,平均‘“班级”人数不超过30人。这样一来,学生与教师的比例非常小,让教授对学生有更多的个人关注。
一些入门课程可能达到40到50人,但多数班级要小得多。而综合性大学的入门课程,上课人数多达数百人,相对小些的课堂还经常会有助教为学生授课。
助学金/奖学金的发放
对于本科申请来说,一般情况下能发放全额奖学金的美国大学主要集中在美国文理学院(Liberal Arts Education)系统之内。如果学生需要助学金,会发现私立文理学院往往比州立院校更加慷慨。因为文理学院愿意花费大部分自由资金来资助学生。
师生关系密切
文理学院与综合性大学注重教师科研及研究生情况截然不同的是,文理学院只提供本科教育。事实上,许多大学的明星教授,包括常春藤盟校,与本科生接触的机会很少。文理学院往往非常注重本科生的校园生活。更少的学生,更亲密的学院设置通常给大家更多的机会去建立友谊、保持长期持久的关系。
