ISEB普通预试通常用作英国独立中学入学，作为对学生入学的一种评估性考试。该考试针对六七年级学生，在参加八年级普通入学考试前测试学生的潜力和成绩。简单来说，它是用来评估学生在进入高中之前的6年级或7年级的成绩的考试。对应参加考试学生的年龄一般是十岁至十二岁。本文着重介绍ISEB普通预试的内容以及考试报名时间。
一、考试形式
ISEB普通预试是在线形式的考试，只要有互联网，学生就可以参加考试。一般来说，学生通常在就读的预科学校参加考试。
这是计算机自适应的考试，都是选择题，因此难度方面，各位家长和同学都不用太担心。它只会测试出学生的真实能力，而不会用艰难的题目来“考倒”学生。
二、预考内容
ISEB普通预试通常包括四门考试，即：
1.英语
测试学生的英语阅读理解能力，句子中的空词、拼写、标点符号等都有细节考察。
2.数学
一般是根据英国国家课程大纲标准来测试学生的数学综合能力。
3.语言推理
主要使用文字来测试学生的思维和问题解决能力。
4.非语言推理
大多是形状、图表、图片，侧重的重点也是学生的思维和问题解决能力。
三、考试时间
预试需要两个半小时。英语考试时间比较短，只需要25分钟。数学考试时间最长，需要五十分钟。语言部分大约36分钟，非语言32分钟。
注意，四个单项考试可以一起参加，也可以分开参加考试。不过，只要开始某一个部分的考试了，就必须一次性完成。考试可以按任意顺序进行。每个单项部分都有计时器，学生可以看到答题倒数时间。
四、预试报名
2023~2024年的普通预试从十月开始报名，家长和监护人可以通过ISEB考前监护人网站完成考试免费注册。
注意，每个高中都有自己的招生政策，这个考试一般只是其中的一部分。申请多所学校的ISEB预考学生，只需要参加一次预考，最终考试结果可以被所有学校共享。同一个考试年中(10月~次年6月)，学生只能参加一次考试。
